On the September 25, 2019 episode of Liberal Dan Radio

On the September 11, 2019 episode of Liberal Dan Radio

On the 18th anniversary of 9/11, Donald Trump has no official national security adviser. While the loss of Bolton is welcome, one can only imagine who will come next. Trump has also stated that he had a secret meeting set up with Taliban officials on US soil. I will discuss my problems with this.

The New Orleans Saints are 1-0 and lead the division. However, Drew Brees still has yet to apologize for his collaboration with Focus on the Family. I will update you on that.

And in the bottom half of the hour, I welcome Isiah James, candidate for the NY-09 congressional seat as part of my #BlueWave series.

My Letter To Drew Brees

Drew Brees has now made national headlines for working with Focus on the Family on a video for “Bring Your Bible To School Day”. Focus on the Family is an organization that has been known to fight against equality for LGBTQ+ folks and who also supports the abhorrent practice of conversion therapy. Brees has posted a video to Instagram and has addressed the media on this issue. Here is my letter to him. Let’s hope he listens.

Dear Mr. Brees,

You have been a role model to many people here in New Orleans. We have seen you embrace New Orleans as your home with the class and dignity of a hero. You helped New Orleans bring home the championship and to that we are all grateful. The people of New Orleans have embraced you with open arms. New Orleans, as you know, is a diverse culture with people from all walks of life. Many of the people who live here are in the LGBTQ+ community.

So when you stand with a group that not only openly promotes discrimination against people who are in the LGBTQ+ community but also supports the abhorrent practice of “conversion therapy” to try and “cure” people of homosexuality, people are going to be hurt and betrayed by that action. The hurt is even more so because the people of New Orleans hold you in such high esteem.

Let me be clear. It doesn’t matter that the video wasn’t about those issues. What matters is that you chose to work with that group.

I was raised Jewish. I do not claim to be an expert of matters of Christianity. But I have tried to learn as much as I can about other faiths so that I can better understand why people believe the way that they do. One of the things that I have learned from the more compassionate kind of Christianity, the one that you claim to support (and not the kind of Focus on the Family), is that Christianity is about humility and asking forgiveness when you harm someone

People are telling you that your actions hurt them. Instead of listening to them and understanding why they are hurting, you are making excuses. You tell us the video wasn’t about homosexuality. You tell us that you didn’t know about their stances on LGBTQ+ matters. You tell us that people are misrepresenting you and your beliefs and that you believe that your actions speak louder than words.

To people who are LGBTQ+ your actions caused pain. Instead of doubling down on why you believe that what you did is right, I am asking you to take the time to sit down with people and let them explain why you doing this video hurts them. Listen to why the simple act of standing with Focus on the Family for this one video sends a bad message about how you feel about them. Talk to people who have been to these conversion therapy camps. Act with humility and learn about what these people go through every single day of their lives. Maybe then you will see why doing any sort of activity with Focus on the Family would be seen as a harmful thing to the LGBTQ+ community. And then, just maybe, you can ask the people you have harmed for their forgiveness and work with them to put an end to conversion therapy and all the ills that this group stands for.

But to do all that you have to be humble, stop making excuses, and listen.

Daniel Zimmerman

(Edited to add) P.S. I know that when people accuse us of doing something we don’t think we’ve done that it seems unfair and our gut instinct is to go into defensive mode. That’s when it’s most important for us to sit back and listen. We are biased because we know what we meant. Only by trying to see our actions from the eyes of others can we really see how those actions impact others.

Drew Brees, Focus on the Family, and Bring Your Bible To School Day.

Focus on the Family, who should really be focusing on their own family and leaving everyone else’s alone, is pushing children to bring their bibles to school and share their favorite verse. Somehow they drafted Drew Brees to help voice this idea.

Brees shares his favorite bible verse, 5 Corinthians 5:7 which states:

” For we live by faith, not by sight.”

I have some other biblical verses that would be fun to bring to school as well.

Numbers 5: 19-24 states:

19 Then the priest shall put the woman under oath and say to her, “If no other man has had sexual relations with you and you have not gone astray and become impure while married to your husband, may this bitter water that brings a curse not harm you.
20 But if you have gone astray while married to your husband and you have made yourself impure by having sexual relations with a man other than your husband”—
21 here the priest is to put the woman under this curse—“may the LORD cause you to become a curse among your people when he makes your womb miscarry and your abdomen swell.
22May this water that brings a curse enter your body so that your abdomen swells or your womb miscarries.” “ ‘Then the woman is to say, “Amen. So be it.”
23 “ ‘The priest is to write these curses on a scroll and then wash them off into the bitter water.
24 He shall make the woman drink the bitter water that brings a curse, and this water that brings a curse and causes bitter suffering will enter her.

Or how about Psalms 137:9

Happy is the one who seizes your infants and dashes them against the rocks.

2 Kings 8:12 states:

12 And Hazael said, “Why does my lord weep?” He answered, “Because I know the evil that you will do to the people of Israel. You will set on fire their fortresses, and you will kill their young men with the sword and dash in pieces their little ones and rip open their pregnant women.”

Exodus 21:22-24

22 “If two men are fighting, and in the process hurt a pregnant woman so that she has a miscarriage, but she lives, then the man who injured her shall be fined whatever amount the woman’s husband shall demand, and as the judges approve. 23 But if any harm comes to the woman and she dies, he shall be executed.
24 “If her eye is injured, injure his; if her tooth is knocked out, knock out his; and so on—hand for hand, foot for foot,

Of course, you may not want to focus on all the areas of the Hebrew bible where the Lord seems to contradict every pro-life argument there is to be had. Maybe you want to try Acts 4:

32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had.33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all 34 that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales 35 and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need.

Sounds like these believers embraced socialism.

Do you have any other great bible verses for “Bring Your Bible To School Day”? I personally don’t believe we should be using school time for evangelism. But hey, if the kids are bringing their favorite religious tracts to school, why not do a little counter-evangelism?

Liberal Dan Radio 9/4/2019: #BlueWave with Robert Emmons Jr and more

On the September 4th, 2019 episode of Liberal Dan Radio:

Donald Trump is changing how some children can become citizens. I will explain the changes and why it is bad for this country and for those serving the country in the military.

Drew Brees, QB for the New Orleans Saints, has done an ad for Focus on the Family. I will explain why this is problematic and go over some choice bible verses to choose for the “bring your bible to school” event he is pushing in the ad.

And at the bottom half of the hour, I will be welcoming Robert Emmons Jr, Candidate for IL-01, to discuss his campaign for Congress.

Bad Arguments for the Electoral College

Conservatives love the Electoral College. It is the only way that they were able to elect Donald Trump in 2016. In defending this antiquated institution, they unfortunately will bring out the same old tired arguments when the truth clearly shows that they cannot win without a system that is rigged in their favor. They gerrymander districts, they kick voters off the roles, and they hold on to the Electoral College that gives small states far too much power than even the founders intended.

Let’s start there. In his article against the attempts to pass the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPV), Trent England suggests that small-town and rural America will be “reduced to serfdom” by the big bad mean city-folk. He feels that rural America will be taken advantage of if you don’t allow the Electoral College to stand as it is. Is that true though? Our founders put in a mechanism that exists simply to help smaller states from being trampled over by the larger ones. It is called the United States Senate. In the Senate, each state has the same power. While the electoral college does grant a state more say by allowing it to count all seats held in both chambers of Congress, I have discussed on my podcast previously that the number of House seats is artificially low. If we took the smallest population state (Wyoming) and used it as a base, and then counted how many “Wyomings” worth of population existed in each state, we would see that we would need about 100 more seats in the House than we currently have.

England says that the Electoral College makes it more difficult to win the Presidency. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Donald Trump won with fewer votes than Hillary Clinton. He literally had to convince fewer people than he would have needed to convince had we used a popular vote system. The Electoral College makes it so that you don’t have to campaign hard. In fact, anywhere between six and ten states are considered “in play” in any given election. While these may fluctuate every four years, candidates only have to campaign in these few states instead of having to convince all fifty that they are the right person for the job. How is that not making the campaign easier?

This also brings up the whole myth of the “flyover state”. Conservatives argue that eliminating the Electoral College will cause these rural states to be excluded from the process. I argue that the current system excludes many people from the process as it is. Many of those people live in those rural states. Candidates only need to focus on those ten states. Let’s look at the states that Donald Trump visited in the general election. Shall we?

Donald Trump Campaign Rallies

Each green dot represents a campaign rally. Notice where these rallies do not take place. None took place in Idaho. None took place in Montana. None took place in all these rural flyover areas. Why? Because the GOP knows that they have these states in the bag. There is no reason for either Presidential candidate to go to these states. The candidates are already treating them as flyover states. What would opening up the popular vote do? It would make every Democrat in those states important again. It would make every Republican in “safe” blue states important again as well. Candidates would have every reason to try and get every single possible vote they could get. These states would no longer be flown over.

England also states that by passing the NPV, states are violating the Constitution. I don’t believe this to be true. Each state is allowed to split up their electors as they see fit. Two states award electors by congressional district with two at-large electors to represent the Senate seats. If a state determines that it will award the electoral votes to whoever wins the national popular vote, then that is their prerogative.

Conservatives are scared that with more people voting, they are more likely to lose. That is why you see all these attempts by Conservatives to keep the vote down. Enacting a popular vote would absolutely drive up voter turnout because people in states that previously didn’t matter will now matter. The way that Conservatives fight this shows us that this is only good for liberals. That is why Conservatives have to come up with these bad arguments in support of the Electoral College. They need to hope that enough people will believe them. Now you know why you shouldn’t.
