Liberal Dan Radio 04/28/2020: The Rona Is Making Everyone Crazy

On the April 29, 2020 episode of Liberal Dan Radio

Is it time to go back and resume normalcy? Many people would have you believe that this is the case. Some states are continuing the shelter in place orders, but other states are pushing way to hard to go back “to normal” which will have disasterous effects.

A bunch of Bernie Sanders supporters want him to get back in the race and are upset over the fact that New York is cancelling the primaries. I will discuss why these people are jumping the shark.

I will also be going over a conversation that I had with a conspiracy theories (get a preview on the Liberal Dan Facebook Page).

Those issues and more, Wednesday April 29, 2020 at 8PM central on Liberal Dan Radio, Talk from the Left, That’s Right.

Socially Distance Yourself From Greedy Companies Permanently

The Paycheck Protection Program was part of the CARES Act, passed to help keep small businesses afloat during the social distancing and the economic shutdown during the Covid-19 Pandemic. Funds can go to both small businesses and independent contractors whose work/hours/income have been reduced. As someone who does independent contracting work as a software developer for a local technology company, I am one of the people who was going to be relying on the program to help support my family during the shutdown.

Banks were told that the loans were supposed to come on a “first come, first served” basis. That was not my experience. I was flat out told that despite my qualifying as a small business, that I couldn’t apply til later. Independent contractors, ready to get these funds, were thrown to the back of the line.

The hotel and restaurant industry lobbied to get an exception for chains with fewer than 500 workers per location. This is another part of the problem. Is it possible that these businesses who can lobby to get exceptions so that they can drink from the same trough as the little guys would also be able to muscle their way in and drink it all up before anyone else got a sip?

The CARES act included inspectors general and other oversight to deal with problems in how these funds would be awarded. Donald Trump has problems with inspectors general and he removed one of them who was charged with being the head of the Pandemic Response Accountability Committee (PARC).

Could businesses be trusted to access these funds or would greed win the day? (I think you know the answer.) According to the link above:

Fogo de Chao received $20 million in PPP loans for two locations. How on earth are two locations using that much money?

Ruth’s Chris Steak House had two subsidiaries get $10 million each from JP Morgan Chase. The Ruth’s Chris parent company had $86.6 million in cash on hand. Loans are capped at $10 million but nothing stopped them from getting multiple loans.

Taco Cabana, Potbelly, Kura Sushi, and J. Alexander’s also got loans for multiple millions of dollars that they did not need.

Shake Shack received loans but then returned them. Does that make them any better because they acted on their greed and only gave it back once they were pressured into doing so? The intent to be horrible is still there and they only reversed course when caught. That does not make them any better in my book.

With the hyper-partisan way that Congress works, it is not surprising that they couldn’t reach deals on making sure that we had adequate protections so that legitimate small businesses, independent contractors, and others who needed the money would be first in line before the big dogs got their turn at the trough. This is not to excuse hyper-partisanship in Congress. However, it is a shining example of the greed that takes place. In a time where we are supposed to come together as a nation, these creeps pushed us aside to take from others.

The only answer that we have as people living in the USA is to say no to these establishments who pushed the little guys out of the way to get aid that they did not need. When the pandemic is over (or even before, in those cases where businesses offer some sort of pickup or delivery service) we need to be supporting the small businesses and avoiding the greedy establishments like the plague. Let’s keep ourselves socially distant permanently from these companies listed here.

Do you know of other companies that were not listed here that took money it didn’t need in the PPP? Comment them below. I will make sure to highlight them on my podcast.

Liberal Dan Radio 04/22/2020: Supremely crazy rulings at the court

On the February 22, 2020 episode of Liberal Dan Radio

The Supreme Court had several interesting rulings this week. They ruled that a person must be convicted by a 12 person jury in order to be locked up (or punished for a serious offense). I will go into the details about the ruling, including how the parties voted (which may very well surprise you).

Another ruling had two Conservative justices bickering in the ruling text. Supremely High Drama.

I will also be discussing the continued reactions to the Covid19 pandemic and how this Administration and several state governors are putting lives ahead of businesses. The #LiberateAmerica and #OpenAmericaNow people will also be discussed.

Liberal Dan Radio 04/15/2020: Biden Endorsed, Trump’s Total Power, Proforma Sessions, and The ‘Rona

On the April 15, 2020 episode of Liberal Dan Radio I discuss all of the Biden endorsements that he picked up this week. I will also be discussing Trump’s imaginary powers that are supposedly “total” including his claimed authority to be able to force Senate adjournment.

Taking your calls as well.

A letter to Conservatives crying about staying at home.

Dear Conservatives,

I believe that you are someone who believes that you should be able to use any amount of force to save a life, yes? If someone is a threat to you, or your family, and their actions would end up killing you or your family, you believe the law gives you the moral authority to take action to protect yourself or that family. Right? You can restrain that person. You can punch that person. You can even kill that person. Right?

You would likely also say that government also has the right to stop that person from harming you and your family. Agents of the government, IE police, can intercept and stop the actions of people who are a risk to others. The court system can even lock them up, removing them from the equation, so that they are no longer a threat.

This is NO DIFFERENT. Instead of a single aggressor coming at you and your family, in a pandemic we are all potential carriers of the thing that could kill you or your family. And the government has just as much authority to prevent each of us from becoming unknowing killers as we or the police have in protecting our families from harm.

To argue that you can use deadly force to protect your family, but that the government can’t restrict businesses to certain operations until the pandemic is over, is highly illogical.

Sincerely,

The people who you may kill with your irresponsibility.

“But they’re the same!”

I know the majority of Bernie Sanders supporters will be voting for Joe Biden in the fall. They understand what is at stake. However, just like 2016 there is a large enough section of people who supported Bernie in the primaries who are threatening to jump ship. In some cases these people even voted for Trump in 2016.

So what do you say when these particular Bernie Sanders supporters try and claim that Biden and Trump are the same and that we are just “centrists”?

I bring up the Supreme Court.

Trump could very well promote Amy Comey Barret to the Supreme Court if RBG resigns or passes away.

That would kill abortion rights and LGBTQ rights in this country. Goodbye Roe v Wade. Goodbye Obergefell V Hodges. Hell, goodbye Lawrence v Texas!

Biden is not going to promote someone to SCOTUS who will overturn those rulings.

Are you gonna blame “centrists” if Trump is able to win and kill abortion rights in this country ? I am progressive and extremist AF on abortion rights. There should be no exceptions to when a pregnant person should be able to abort.

Would I prefer Biden be for Medicare for all? Sure.

Guess what? Bernie would have needed a Congress that would have enacted M4A. So work to elect that Congress. Get that bill on Biden’s desk with a way to pay for it. (Biden said he wouldn’t sign M4A if it is wasn’t paid for) Force his hand.

Bernie would have needed a Congress to enact legislation to ban fracking. Elect that Congress. Force Biden’s hand.

Bernie would have needed a Congress that would have passed green new deal energy bills. Elect that Congress anyway. Force Biden’s hand. But don’t sit by and let Trump name the next one or two SCOTUS nominees.

*This of course is irrelevant in many of the other safe red states. I see no evidence that Louisiana will do anything but vote Trump. So if you live in Louisiana, or any other safe red state, I couldn’t care less who you vote for.

But in states like MI/WI/PA/FL etc, voting third party, writing Bernie in, or doing anything other than voting for the Democratic nominee will set us back decades.

And if you want to label me a centrist for that? Then I question your definitions.

Why is Trump pushing hydroxychloroquine so hard? Is there a link to Michael Cohen?

In spite of his medical experts saying that any claims of efficacy are anecdotal and not found in any sort of clinical trial, Donald Trump is pushing the idea of the potential “miracle cure” that is hydroxychloroquine.

Early on in the pandemic, Trump believed that it would magically go away, like a miracle. So maybe he is simply trying to hang his hat on that. He does have a very simple mind and maybe that is all it is.

But he can act in nefarious ways. I have posited on Youtube and on Twitter that maybe he is pushing this miracle cure like a snake oil salesman because perhaps he invested in the companies that make the drug and is trying to make a quick buck by pumping the stocks up and then dumping them. I have no evidence that he has invested in these companies but I wouldn’t be surprised if he had.

But there is another nefarious reason here if you connect the dots. Norvartis, a company that makes the drug, paid Michael Cohen over a million dollars to do work that Cohen proved “unable to do”. Novartis believed Cohen ““could advise the company as to how the Trump administration might approach certain U.S. health-care policy matters, including the Affordable Care Act.”

Michael Cohen plead guilty on 8 counts. He was Donald Trump’s lawyer for 12 years.

This doesn’t pass the smell test.
