WAKE UP WHITE PEOPLE

There is a serious problem going on in America today. And if good white people do not realize the issues facing our country today and do not wake up, they will be dooming us to failure.

So what are the urgent problems that caused me to utilize a slogan typically used by white supremacist assholes? The problems are the issue of racism, the existence of multiple systems of justice in this country, ignoring your privilege, and those people who are not seeking to fix those three problems in a meaningful way.

In Charlotte last week another mass murder happened. It was another example of a white person going on a killing spree and getting arrested with no harm done to him. Tamir Rice, a black child waiving a toy gun in a park, was rolled up on and shot immediately without any warning. He had not killed anybody. But he died at the hands of police. John Crawford III was in a Walmart with a pellet gun. The police were called. In the middle of the first warning to drop the weapon, an officer raised his and killed another black man. Again, this was a black man who had killed nobody and had not shown himself to be a threat to anyone. Regardless, he is dead.

Yet the shooter in Charleston proved himself to be a danger to others. When apprehended no harm came to him. In fact, it is now being reported that the police brought Roof to Burger King to get a bit to eat on the way to prison. Granted, some might suggest that such a meal might amount to torture. But Freddie Grey died on his way to Jail in Baltimore. Why shouldn’t we view our system of justice as a fractured one?

Want more examples of multiple systems of justice in this country? Look at the black man who was submitting to arrest peacefully who got a kick in the head for his compliance. White men can openly carry and a police officer asks polite questions of them. Black men cannot. Jimmy Joe Berggren reached into a cop car in a police station and grabbed an AR 15 and was arrested and charged after being told three times to put the gun down. Do you believe a black man doing that would have also been arrested and called a “gentleman” by officers? Or do you believe he would have been shot on sight.

When black people do things that are wrong, we often hear that they need to be introspective on how the black community may have contributed to the actions of one bad actor. However, when white people do wrong, they are allowed to be the only one blamed. Nobody asks white communities to look inward at the harm their actions could cause. Nobody asks white Americans to take any sort of responsibility in how their actions (or inaction) leads to violence by other whites. And I think I have figured out why. Society views whiteness as “good”. And if whiteness is good then it must not be the fault of other whites if something goes wrong with one. It must be an exception. But society views blackness as bad. Black people are considered guilty until proven innocent. So if a black person does wrong, it must be because he is a product of his environment. This is one of the major problems in society that white people need to wake up to .

So what can good white people do to wake up? This is not an exhaustive list but it is a good start.

A) Listen. When someone says that something you, or someone else, said (or did) was hurtful and racist, don’t automatically get defensive. Take a moment and try to understand what the other person is feeling. Recognize that the life experiences of that other person and yours are not likely to match. As such that person may react differently to things that you may find tame. I am not saying you have to agree with the other person all the time. But if you take the time to listen and try to understand, you may find that you get along better. You might also learn something.

B) Accept your privilege and work to fight it. You should not, as a white person, feel guilty for being born white. It is not your fault that you have the privilege of being white (and as such you are less likely to be stopped and frisked because of your race by a police officer, you are less likely to be pulled over for driving while black, and you are less likely in general to be treated as guilty until proven innocent by the police). When someone says you have privilege, it is because other people do not. And while you are not to blame for having privilege or even benefiting from it, you are to blame if you sit back and do nothing. You are to blame if you do not work to fix the system that perpetuates that certain people will have road blocks placed in their way simply because of the nature of their birth.

And finally the last suggestion I have is to make their problem your problem. Our country will never fully be united as long as white people continue to look at problems that happen to minorities as problems that happen to those other people. If another person of color is shot and killed, take it personally. Say “one of my people was shot and killed today” and when people ask what you mean by “your people” say “a human being”. White people are the most capable of effecting this sort of change. Why? Because when persons of color try to move that boulder, they are downhill from that rock. They are pushing that rock uphill. White people who do not work to fix the problem are basically pushing the rock down hill, a much easier task (and one that will roll over all those trying to push). But if those entrenched white people also help pull from their dug in positions, the rock is more easily moved and it enables other people to reach the high ground. So this is why you, good white people, need to take the responsibility and fight for what your country should be, and that is a place where all people are treated equally and fairly.

Signed,

A white guy .

Liberal Dan Radio 4/30/2015: Marriage and #BaltimoreUprising

On the April 30, 2015 episode of Liberal Dan Radio I will be discussing some of the points made at the Supreme Court hearing on Obergefell V Hodges, what very may well be the final marriage equality case seen by the Supreme Court.

And then I will be discussing the Baltimore Uprising movement, the killing of Freddie Gray, and why there is a lot of hypocrisy by many white people, especially Conservative white folks, on many of the issues that are being raised.

I won’t be doing any special bits this week because these issues are far too serious for jokes

Liberal Dan Radio 4/9/2015: More on Food Babe Garbage and Bigotry issues

On the April 9, 2015 episode of Liberal Dan Radio:

The “Food Babe” is getting a lot of negative publicity this week with a well written article on Gawker that is clearly showing the idocy of her and her followers. A counter group called “Banned By Food Babe” is cited the article. And since both the Liberal Dan Radio twitter accound and my personal twitter account has been banned by one of the people contributing to the stupification of America, I fit right in. Sure we have some differences but if you have been blocked/banned by the “Food Babe” by all means check this group out .

More information has come out about the Indiana law that would allow for anti-gay discrimination. I will further discuss this issue.

I will also be discussing the murder of Walter Scott.

Liberal Dan Radio 02/26/2015: CPAC, Internet Neutrality, and Jigawhat?

On the November 26, 2015 episode of Liberal Dan Radio:

Kristi Capel, 2006 Miss Missouri USA and current Fox newscaster in Ohio, was commenting on Lady Gaga and her music in general after the Oscars and dropped a racial slur in the process. There has been a lot of coverage of this but it makes me ask the question of if sometimes you can get a pass if you are assumed to be stupid.

CPAC started this week, so I will go over a small review of what has happened so far.

Finally, the FCC made a decision about Net Neutrality. I will go over what this means for you and why many Conservatives are wrong when it comes to this regulation of the internet.

Judged by the company you keep

With Mary Landrieu losing the Louisiana Senatorial runoff election last year, one could say that the conservative tidal wave that started by the “Southern Strategy” implemented by Nixon and Reagan is now complete. Liberals like myself have been critical of the GOP and the utilization of the “Southern Strategy”. Nixon and Reagan targeted disenfranchised white southerners who used to be registered as Democrats but became disenfranchised after the Democratic Party started supporting civil rights legislation. Reagan would say things like “I didn’t leave the Democratic Party, the Democratic Party left me”. Reagan went so far as to discuss “states rights” in Philadelphia MS. That was the location of the murders of several civil rights workers. The people who murdered them, and others who felt like them, believed that “states rights” enabled Jim Crow and other laws meant to keep black persons as second class citizens.

Typically when you try and reach out to a group and want to convince them to vote with you, the idea is that you want them to keep voting with you. This means you need to give them reasons to continue voting for you and as such you will have to pass laws and support policies that they like. So Reagan creating a coalition that included white southern racists meant that he would have to pander to those people if he wanted to keep their votes.

Now we have Steve Scalise and his speech at the Landmark Hotel in Metairie Louisiana. There are a lot of conflicting stories about the nature of his talk including what was spoken about and who was the targeted audience. I am not going to go into all of those items in this post. However, one thing has been made pretty clear. Steve Scalise accepted an invitation from Kenny Knight to speak that day. Kenny Knight is a David Duke ally and a known racist and anti-semite. According to Knight, Scalise knew about Knight and his feelings on people who are black on the topic of the “Jewish Question” (his words). If Scalise knew of these things then why on earth would he accept a speaking invitation from him?

I was raised Jewish and have many friends who are black. Steve Scalise is the 3rd ranking member of the House. It concerns me greatly that someone with that much power and influence would be pandering to racists and anti-semites. Scalise should be judged by the company he keeps. And it seems pretty clear that he had no problem accepting a speeing engagement where he was invted by a racist and anti-semite.

Political Prostitution: The underlying problem of the new Steve Scalise news

Louisiana has some history with politicians and prostitutes. Just look at David Vitter. However, that is not the prostitution I am writing about. I am referring to political prostitution, the willingness to do whatever it takes to be elected. The willingness to basically have no personal values and instead go where the wind blows you and be willing to accept any speaking engagement or endorsement without giving it a thought.

Take Joseph Cao for example. The former Congressman from Louisiana’s Second Congressional District was willing to take all endorsements regardless of who they came from. One group he accepted an endorsement from was the Louisiana Family Forum. The LFF is the Louisiana offshoot of the Family Research Council, a group that the Southern Poverty Law Center has deemed a hate group. When I called the Jeff Crouere show to ask him about his acceptance of that endorsement, Joseph Cao said that he didn’t know much about the group but was happy to accept their endorsement. This was enough for me to reject him in the jungle primary and instead vote for another candidate who seemed to have more character than Cao.

I have also rejected other candidates for blindly accepting endorsements. Many politicians in New Orleans have accepted endorsements from the “Regular Democratic Organization”. When I ask them if they know anything about the history of the RDO, they often do not. Well, the RDO split from the Orleans Parish Democratic Party when Mayor Moon Landrieu and his allies in the Democratic party endorsed civil rights and integration.

So now the blog CenLamar has made national news for uncovering the fact that when House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) was a State Legislator, he accepted a speaking engagement at a EURO convention. EURO stands for the European-American Unity and Rights Organization. They stand for so called “white civil rights”. Basically they are a horrible organization tied to David Duke and anybody living in Louisiana at the time, especially politically active persons, should have been aware of this. Scalise has been criticized for failing to know this simple fact when he spoke in front of them. Some have even suggested that he should have known upon entering the convention that something was not right at this speaking engagement. Others suggested that he was understaffed and would not have had the time to fully vet each speaking engagement. Unless something in writing turns up where Scalise informs David Duke that he would love to attend the event and completely endorses its purposes, the only person who will really know the limit of Congressman Scalise’s knowledge of the event and who was putting it on is Congressman Scalise.

That being said, this is just another example of political prostitution. If Scalise did know who he was speaking in front of, he just proves that he will speak in front of anyone for political gain. If Scalise didn’t know who he was speaking in front of, he just proves that he doesn’t care who he speaks in front of for political gain. This proves that he has no principles. All one really has to do is listen to his political stances to realize this. When he was on WWL Radio previously discussing several issues, including the Affordable Care Act, Scalise just parroted all the same points that every other GOP rep makes. There is no new thought there. There is no divergence from his party. There is no “unlike some people in my party, I would keep x even though I dislike y and z”. He, like many other politicians these days, is just an empty shell filled with canned rhetoric and willing to do whatever it takes to win. And that is ultimately why he spoke in front of EURO. I cannot say that Scalise is a racist, but I will say that he is a political whore.

Liberal Dan Radio 6/25/2014: More on Jindal and his party of stupid and more

On the June 25, 2014 episode of Liberal Dan Radio:

Bobby Jindal is still up to no good, including discussing the idea of a “hostile takeover” of the US. I will continue my review of him and his leadership of the stupid party.

Front and center of the stupid party is the tea party. When Senator Cochran defeated tea party candidate Chris McDaniel in the GOP primary runoff in Mississippi, he did so by reaching out to Democrats in black communities. The response by the tea party folks is amazing and shows why they continue to have a perception problem (if not a problem in reality).

Finally, the Supreme Court made a very big ruling on privacy rights today. Even better is that the ruling was unanimously reached. I will go into that subject as well.

Liberal Dan Radio 4/30/2014: Rednecks, Racism, and Retake Congress

On the April 30, 2014 episode of Liberal Dan Radio:

Words of Redneck wisdom makes a triumphant return but this time not from our good old boy from CPAC. I will give you three guesses on who it is.

And then from Rednecks to older businessmen and racism. LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling has also, allegedly, come out making some horrible comments about race. I will go over some of the words made and discuss why this is worse than some people are giving him “credit” for.

Finally, Liberal Dan Radio continues the #RetakeCongress segment by inviting candidate for Congress in the 6th district of Texas David Cozad.
